  • A conversation with Baltimore jazz piano virtuoso, and bandleader of The New Volcanoes, Lafayette Gilchrist. He shares music from his groundbreaking album, Towards the Shining Path, and talks about his vision for the future of jazz
  • Moira Egan shares a poem about inspiration, its capriciousness and its importance
  • And novelist Michael Kun tells a story about bad penmanship, and a really bad relationship

Tonight (03.10.06) at The Whole Gallery in downtown Baltimore, Playground Productions presents Rule of Thirds, a show to benefit the Artists Helping Children Foundation. The show features several local artists, including Brian Baker, Ocean May, and S. Preston. An opening-night reception gets underway at 7, with music later in the evening by Shawn Phase, Headwounds, and Graceskull. The Whole Gallery is located at 405 W. Franklin St. on the 3rd Floor. This Saturday (03.11.06), Friends of the Baltimore Hostel present Exploring Ireland and Irish Heritage: A Slide Presentation and Talk by Denny Lynch. It’s a benefit funding efforts to renovate and re-open the historic Baltimore Hostel at 17 West Mulberry Street. The talk kicks off in the hostel’s grand common room at 7 P.M with photographer Denny Lynch, who has spent over a decade documenting his family’s Irish heritage. He’ll share his photographs and stories, and a reception with Irish light fare follows the presentation. More information is at 410-576-8880 or online at www.baltimorehostel.org.

March is Women’s History Month, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library is observing the occasion with a selection of outrageous animated short films by women. Animated Women: A Celebration of Women Filmmakers features shorts by Sally Cruikshank, Kathy Rose, Janet Perlman, Suzanne Pitt, and others. The program screens tomorrow afternoon (03.11.06) at 2:30 in the Wheeler Auditorium at the library’s Central Branch. That’s at 400 Cathedral St, and more details are at www.epfl.net.
